Steps To Control Indoor Air Pollution

By: Donald Munn

In today’s society it seems that we are constantly bombarded with warnings about pollution and smog. All you have to do some days is look into the distance and you can see for yourself that the air is hazy with pollution being emitted from our cars and industry. We think of our homes as a refuge, a place where we can retreat from society and it’s problems and distractions. Unfortunately, when it comes to getting away from pollution, our homes are often the last place we should be retreating to.

Often, the air we breathe in our homes is 2 to 5 times more polluted than the air outside. This is due in large part to poor ventilation and not adequately caring for the air inside our homes. One of the most important things you can do is keep your Heat Recovery Ventilator or Air Exchanger properly maintained. This means cleaning filters and cleaning the exchanger core regularly.

Maintaining your HRV or Air Exchanger is only part of the solution. We are constantly bringing in and creating dust. Simply moving around in your home and coming and going creates dust. Then there are dust mites, which are found in most homes and it doesn’t matter how clean you are.

To maintain good air quality in your home you must use a good quality furnace filter or air conditioner filter in central heating and cooling units. If you don’t have central heating or cooling a good air purifier can make a big difference in air quality.

There are many different varieties of filters available to meet most needs. If you suffer from allergies you may require very clean air. This can be attained by using one or a combination of filter types. The most common types of furnace filters are low efficiency throw away filters, pleated filters, media air filters, electrostatic filters, electronic air filter and HEPA filters. There are also many different types of air purifiers available to choose from, some are good products but you can easily waste your money if you are not careful.

There is a lot of information about air filters available online. Many times
information is incomplete and often misleading. It is best if you are able to find a reliable source who has experience in this industry.

Do your research, ask questions, contact webmasters, ask your local contractor for advice. You should never rely on only one source of information when upgrading or buying new air filters or air cleaning equipment.
