Now that the new season of the hit show Dancing with the Stars is under way, you’re waltzing around the living room and practicing the tango during the commercial break. But why not take up some serious samba-ing for your health? Experts say ballroom dancing could help the mind and body. It depends on the type of dancing and your skill level, but “once someone gets to the point where they're getting their heart rate up, they're actually getting a terrific workout,” says one fitness expert. Others suggest dancing is great for the upper body and strengthening the core (abs and back), and for working muscles that aren’t normally worked. And if you dance as a moderate to vigorous daily activity, you can burn calories. Dance can even challenge your mind – it increases blood flow to the brain, decreases stress and depression, and aids metal clarity. Two left feet? That’s okay. You’re not going to practice for hours with a world-class dance partner - you just want to learn the basics from a class instructor. The gym on Monday, yoga on Wednesday, ballroom dance on Friday…for an exciting way to exercise, incorporate any kind of dance into your weekly routine.
