Osteoporosis

By: Paul Conway

The definition of osteoporosis is a condition that will cause your bones to weaken thus making them more susceptible to breaking. If you suffer from this condition it means that your bones are less dense than normal bones. This condition occurs in approximately 5 people in every 100 in the United Kingdom. The term osteoporosis means porous bones.

Osteoporosis symptoms can creep up on you without your knowledge, this makes it all the more reason to make sure that we keep our bones and general health in good order. Some of the more common osteoporosis injuries are hip and wrist fractures. However they can manifest in any bone. If you are suffering from long term neck or back pains then this could be caused by osteoporosis which would show itself in a loss of height and possible curved back.

The bones in your body are constantly renewing themselves in a process called bone turnover. What happens is old bone is broken down and absorbed by your body, as the new bone is created by fresh protein and minerals in your body. The main mineral that is used is calcium. So it is important that you eat correctly to maintain this cycle of events. So as to prevent osteoporosis occurring.

With the young and children the bone turnover is different, in that they make more new bone than what is broken down. This is why there bones are more dense and bigger, so no osteoporosis. Bone mass turnover is at its peak when you are in your 20’s and will last for approximately ten years. The bone turnover will be roughly equal during this period. As you enter your mid thirties bone loss will begin to overtake bone regeneration. This is part of getting old, a natural occurrence. If you then start to suffer from osteoporosis this process will speed up that much quickly and you will be prone to fractures that much easily.

There are ways to prevent the onslaught of osteoporosis. If you lead an unhealthy lifestyle then a change is a must. The proper diet and exercise regime will aid an increase in your bone mass thus reducing the risk of getting osteoporosis. Low impact training exercises will help you. For example walking, swimming, running, weight training to name but a few will aid increasing your bone mass turnover. Carrying out any of these exercises for 20/30minutes 2/3 three times a week will see a vast improvement.

When it comes to eating then make sure that your diet is rich in calcium which we know is very important in maintaining healthy bones. Obvious sources of calcium are milk, dairy products such as yogurt and hard cheese. Not forgetting fruit! This will ensure that you are getting the correct minerals so as to aid in your fight against suffering from osteoporosis.
